The concept of sustainable development was proposed in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WECD), also known as the Brundtland Commission, which defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Sustainability is now recognized as a key issue facing our society, ensuring the coexistence of economy and the environment.
